The Trust has been active in Central and South America for many years now and has built up strong relationships with regional and local partners. These partnerships have helped us reach freelancers in Bolvia, Colombia, Cuba, El Savador, Mexico and Peru and undertake a breakthrough project in Mexico that led to the country's first ever safety training courses for journalists.

We are now looking to expand our presence in the region and, to identify the needs of freelancers in other latin american countries - especially in Guatemala and Hondouras where the situation of journalists is worsening.

Mexico Good Practice Programme
A 2-year country-wide project that researched and raised awareness of the situation of freelance journalists in Mexico and encouraged practical measures for their safety and protection.  Read more here

Safety Training in Mexico
In September 2008, before international attention turned on Mexico, we partnered with Article 19 Mexico and the Red Cross, to put together the first ever safety training course specially tailored for journalists living and working in the country.  We have since collaborated with Article 19 on 3 further courses and will continue to help Mexican freelancers gain accesss to this vital training.  Read more here

Cuba - The Black Spring Freelancers
A group initiative set up to support the families of 21 freelance journalists imprisoned by the Cuban government in 2003 and which is now helping those journalists who were freed in 2010 and deported with their families to Spain.
